O Olympians
If only you knew
The source of your strength
Does not come from you.
You run, you jump
You twist, you flip
Lift crazy big weights
With tenacious grip.
You run like the wind
You conquer the waves
You swim like a shark
Train 8 hours a day.
Every muscle attuned
To your ironclad will
Pushing yourself past the limits
But still….
You’re really just human
Like gawkers who watch
Glued to the screen
As the glib experts talk.
They tell us your stories
That we love to hear
You overcame obstacles
Facing your fears.
Since you were little,
You strove for the gold
And now that you’ve got it?
You’re gonna grow old.
You’re gonna get wrinkles
Your hair will turn gray
You might try coaching
But you cannot delay
The inevitable end
The judgment we face
Did you do it yourself?
Or depend upon grace?
The ancients wrote
That Pride precedes Fall
Did you learn that the humble
In the end receive all?
If it wasn’t for God
Who fashioned your frame
Who blessed you with talent
Who calls you by name
If it wasn’t for Him,
You could do ZIP
Not even a cartwheel
Nary a flip.
So I hope when your head
Hits the pillow tonight
You’ll ponder the source
Of your incredible flight.
From baby to champion
From pipsqueak to fame
The Lord’s looking on
He’s calling your name.
I pray you will hear
I beg you to bow
Your Creator awaits
His love pouring out.
His grace never ages
His truth never fails
He knows Sacrifice
In three iron nails.
O Olympians!
Amazing you are!
I wish you the best!
I hope you’ll go far.
But when the trail ends
Encounter the Truth!
The Source of your strength
Is Him. Not you.
