More on Mrs. Kate's Miami Tour (November 2010)
What were you doing in Miami, Mrs. Kate?
I was singing in the libraries. Sponsored by the Miami Dolphins Foundation, the Miami-Dade Public Libraries asked me to come down and sing in 4 of their branches to help celebrate their bookmark contest. I had great audiences and a rip-roaring splendid time!
Did you have any other gigs?
Yes! I sang for the Pinelands Enrichment Homeschool Group and the University of Miami's Canterbury Preschool for their Homecoming Celebration.
Who was your roadie?
Joanna Kenyon. She was recommended by some fans of mine, the Xiques family from Miami. Joanna is a very talented young lady and an accomplished musician and composer. I got to hear her and her sister sing, and her brother play the guitar. Their mom is musical, too. They gave me a little concert in their home one evening and I felt like I was in a scene of a Jane Austen movie. (You know, the kind where after dinner everyone goes into the parlor and sing and perform for their company.) This was one of the best experiences of my tour.
Who'd you stay with?
Most of the time I stayed with Gustavo and Stephanie Formenti, a very loving young missionary couple who are expecting their first child this month. They took such good care of me.
What were your impressions of Miami?
It's a jungle out there!
What were you doing in Little Havana?
I had also been asked to speak at a Ladies Retreat at Iglesia Alianza Hispana in Hialeah. This was one of the hardest things I have ever agreed to do, but when I prayed about it, God told me to say yes, so I said yes. After I agreed to speak, I began to have second thoughts. How can I prepare 3 one hour sermons? Scary! It took me 3 full days of work to prepare the sermons. (Topic: Being Filled with the Holy Spirit).
What happened when you got to the church?
All the wonderful ladies gave me kisses and hugs (besos y abrazos) and made me feel welcome.
What language did you speak in?
Spanish! It was my major in college. When I was in high school, I spent 2 summers down in Mexico, living with Mexican families and learning the lingo. I have always loved the beauty of the Spanish language rolling off the tongue. My sermons were only about 20-30 minutes long; then I sang some songs and we had discussion groups.
What did you like most about Miami?
I liked the people. Met so many warm and friendly folks. Kind of de-bunks the "Miami Fright Syndrome" so many people have. I also loved driving through Coconut Grove and seeing vintage homes and gangly banyan trees.
Would you go back?
Most definitely!
When's your next tour?
Looks like I may be on the road in February (Sarasota) and March (Lakeland). Now booking tour gigs, so if you are interested, email me at MrsKate@MrsKate.com.
